8 Strengths of Introverts - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / 8 Strengths of Introverts - Introvert Whisperer 8 Strengths of Introverts Introversion can, sometimes, feel like a barrier when it comes to job hunting. Extroverts seem so much better suited to the processes of seeking new opportunities and impressing people theyâve never met before, and then settling in to being part of a team. But itâs important to remember that any team needs a mixture of personalities and skills, and employers are increasingly understanding the value of diversity in hiring. Alongside that, there are some particular strengths that come with introversion that we shouldnât hesitate to talk about. So, before you go to your next interview, think about the positive things that being an introvert brings to a team, and try and work examples into your answers to interview questions. Here are a few to get you started: Itâs easy to recharge All an introvert needs to recharge their metaphorical batteries is to spend some time alone, preferably at home. While others might need to go out, spending time money socialising, we can bounce back simply by closing the curtains and taking a few deep breaths. That translates to less late nights and hangovers. Independence Introverts prefer to work on their own, and so they tend to find ways to manage without involving other colleagues. This gives them a resourcefulness that their more gregarious colleagues donât share. Introverts tend to be self-motivated and willing and able to take on responsibility. They donât need a team of cheerleaders to get them to the finish line. Self-sufficiency is particularly important if youâre looking to work from home, full or part-time. Remote workers need to be able to solve their own problems, particularly if they work in different timezones to other team members. Focus Introverts tend to look at a situation from the outside in. That gives a different perspective to those who are caught up in the middle of the hustle and bustle of a situation. Being able to see things differently is a big advantage when it comes to problem-solving, and for tasks like risk assessments. The introvert is more likely to see the big picture, rather than get caught up in the detail. And that focus can come in handy when you have to play the extrovert and socialise. When you listen to people and memorise what they tell you, you will always have something to talk about when you find yourself in more social situations. Something Worth Listening To If an introvert speaks at a meeting, itâs worth listening. You wonât catch us talking just to hear the sound of our own voices. Introverts will only speak when they have something that they believe is of value to the whole group to share. Introverts tend to think carefully before they say anything, that not only means theyâre likely to have a well thought out opinion, but they will probably put it over concisely. More Grey Matter Did you know there are actual differences in the brain structure of introverts and extroverts? A Harvard Study suggests that introverts have bigger, thicker grey matter in their pre-frontal cortices; the part of the brain that deals with planning, decision-making and moderating social behaviour. The authors of the study think that may be why introverts tend to sit back and consider while theyâre more extroverted colleagues are ready to leap in head first. Subtlety Introverts prefer to avoid confrontation, so they are often able to solve problems in more subtle ways. Expect an introvert to handle issues with quiet conversations and mediation rather than by laying down the law. Introverts wield influence, that forward-thinking coming into play again as they determine how best to achieve what needs to be done. The Future is Made for Introverts As technological advances encourage remote working, and in-person communication gives way to text messages, email and chat, so the world becomes a more level playing field for the introvert. Itâs probably no coincidence that this is the case, given some of the most influential figures in technology are also introverts including Bill Gates, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are all considered to be introverts. The future is introverted, because weâre making it that way. Teaming Up Great things can happen when introverts and extroverts work together. Consider Apple and itâs founders, Steve Jobs, the âfront-manâ and Steve Wozniak, the man behind the curtain to Jobsâ Wizard of Oz. If youâre a very introverted person then itâs well worth considering a partnership with someone who is your opposite in that respect. Between the two of you, you could change the world. 5 Habits to Avoid During Class
5 Habits to Avoid During Class Ever wonder why youre just not grasping that material in class? We usually blame the subject matter for being too difficult. Sometimes that is correct, but maybe youre just standing in your own way and dont even realize it. Having trouble thoroughly understanding the material isnt always a comprehension issue. As a matter of fact, it is more often an issue of focus. Unfortunately, that tends to be a difficult thing to control when youre tired, bored, or just not interested in the material. There are many habits, however, that we can consciously stop, and several of these are what hurt a students ability to focus the most. You may also want to check out these tips on how to prepare for college classes. Whether these habits are due to laziness, a need for entertainment, or a hope for getting energized, the main effect they are producing is distraction. Listed below are some common habits you should make sure to avoid when in the classroom. Bringing your laptop: In the last few years, this has become more and more of an attractive concept to students. Many teachers are even banning it in recognition of its distracting ways. Being the essential item that it is, students are finding it increasingly more difficult to pass on bringing this beloved object of technology with them everywhere they go. Laptops may be convenient to pack up and later open up once you get settled at your desk, but they will take away from your classroom experience more than youll ever realize. Even if you bring it for the sole purpose of typing out your notes or following Powerpoint slides online, that bright screen is still going to distract you. With Facebook and Twitter just a click away, your odds of staying focused are not looking good. Save yourself the trouble and just leave your computer in your room. Having a disorganized backpack: School schedules can make a young person quite busy, so its understandable how one can end up with their books and pens completely jumbled in their backpack. Especially if youre running late, its more than likely that youll end up just tossing in whatever notebooks and writing utensils you can find at the last minute. You may have the necessary items all set, but once you arrive to class in an unexcited state, the last thing youll want to do is have to search through a messy bag for things to take notes on/with. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to find a well-sharpened pencil when it comes time to take notes. Also, when the teacher references a page in the textbook, youre probably going to miss out on seeing that reference for yourself if its a chore to get that book out of your backpack. Make it easy for yourself to get all of these materials out in a timely fashion so you wont be cheated out of keeping up with the class. These are 6 ha bits to become a more organized studentthat you may also want to take a look at. Snacking too much: This is another one that several teachers are forbidding. Maybe you skipped breakfast or are just antsy for lunch, but too many snacks during class will divert your mind. You may think it will help you concentrate since you are fulfilling your hunger and it may do that a little bit but you will mostly be distracting yourself and others. Aside from the fact that crunching on a bag of chips or slurping down a smoothie will probably annoy your classmates, your enjoyment of these treats will usually take priority over your attempt at absorbing the teachers lecture. It is also more difficult to ask a question or participate in class discussion when your mouth is full. If you need just a little something to tide you over that wont take more than about a minute to eat, thats one thing. But bringing a platter of snacks to get you through the entire class period will do more harm than good. If anything, who likes dealing with a mess of crumbs and wrappers? Texting: This is a classic tool of distraction for students everywhere. It is also an action that is almost always on the do not list for teachers, but students tend to sneak past it. Well, the teachers restrict this with good reason. Not only will you be distracting yourself with whatever conversation you are having, but the great effort taken to keep the act of texting discreet will distract your mind even more. If this is how you spend your class, youll walk away only having learned how to keep your phone out of your teachers sight. Needless to say, this is not the knowledge your teacher intended for you to leave with. Over-accessorizing: Bringing too many items to class is a sure-fire way to get distracted. For instance, if you make the top of your classroom desk appear as an office desk, youve brought too many things. Having a notebook and pens surrounded by a soda, a granola bar, highlighters, chap-stick, and that laptop of yours, will not help you in the long run. There is nothing wrong with being prepared, but keep all of these things organized in your backpack until and if you need them. Setting so much in front of you right away creates your own little world apart form the classrooms, and the classrooms world is the one you need to be in. Additionally, avoid hats that can somewhat block your vision or too much jewelry that can get in your way. Just keep things simple when you head to class. Things To Focus On as a Journalism Major
Things To Focus On as a Journalism Major To be frank, journalism is a tough job market especially now. The field is changing and positions are being eliminated. Yet, this is also one of the fields that offers a great deal of opportunities for students to take advantage of to build up their resum before they even graduate. This should be a particularly appealing concept right now since the ability to build experience in the actual workforce after graduation is dwindling before our eyes for several fields. But thankfully, there is still a lot of freedom for journalism students to get their bylines out there. The most obvious go-to is the plethora of sites out there with opportunities for students to write articles and blog posts on virtually any topic. It is typically not too difficult to get on a websites list of contributing writers and subsequently get the option to pitch and write a piece every now and then. There are endless sites out there that just rely on opinions and creativity to present such articles, but there are also many that allow student writers to stretch themselves a little more and do some real reporting on the subject of their choice. Whether you dream of writing hard-news articles or magazine features, there is a spot on the internet for you to get your words published. Many famous and well-respected news publications have created college branches online, such as USA TODAY College or Huffington Post College. With a simple Google search, you will find no end to these mediums and are guaranteed to find at least one, if not many, sites that fit your style. Also, dont f orget about freelancing. Many publications, especially ones like The Patch, give aspiring journalists in all locations the opportunity to report on and write up stories. Of course, the student newspaper is integral to a journalism majors career. This is one of the best opportunities you can make use of, as it will get your byline out there but more importantly, give you intense and direct experience in the journalism world. Many graduates who came out of student newspapers say that was where they really were able to get on their feet and learn a lot through hands-on experience. The editors of a student newspaper tend to take the operation very seriously and have high standards for their staff. Being composed of all students, this gives each and every one of you moments to shine as a responsible worker whose publication is depending on them, something that will be emphasized more than you can imagine when in the workforce. Pitching ideas, writing under tight deadlines, covering breaking news, tracking down people for interviews all of which youll be doing while youre a student with a full class schedule will teach you and prepare you better than mos t journalism classes alone will. And dont forget that if you really devote yourself, the chance to grow and take on a leadership position will come upon you. Nothing will make applying for something like a Managing Editor job at an established journal post-graduation easier than being able to say you have held that type of position already With these great notations to put on your resum, the next and final step is to land internships. Youve developed a great elevator speech already and you havent even been hired by a publication yet, so acquiring internships should be feasible. Youre so much better off than you would have been had you not gone after the aforementioned opportunities. Making sure you get as much solid internship experience as you can before graduation will really increase your chances of getting a job later on. If your hands-on experience carries over from the student newspaper into professional newsrooms, your journalism major will continue to be fulfilled in the best ways possible. If you follow this path of action, you will be doing more than studying journalism youll be living it. Isnt that what we all strive to do as soon as possible regarding our careers? A journalism student can get real live glimpses of their dream by seeing their name in print before they are even hired. They can uncover a story and get credit for it. Put your skills to use frequently enough as a student and youll be getting paid to do these things before you know it.
5 Tips to Write a Great College Application Essay
5 Tips to Write a Great College Application Essay If youre the parent of a college-bound student, you know well all that goes into the college admissions process. From taking the SAT or ACT to the researching of colleges, theres a lot to do in a relatively short amount of time. But what about the application essay? If the college to which your teen is applying requires or strongly recommends that he or she write an essay, there are a number of things your teen can do to put his or her best foot forward, saysEileen Huntington ofHuntington Learning Center. Here are five tips: Put thought into choosing the right topic. Most colleges' essay prompts are open ended, as admissions officers generally hope that students will give good thought to selecting a topic that shows who they are and what they are capable of. Encourage your teen to be authentic and introspective, to think about what he or she is proud of and passionate about as well as life experiences that have required your teen to work harder, overcome setbacks or change. Remind your teen that the goal isn't to impress the college with a laundry list of achievements, but rather, to present oneself in a way that is different than what the admissions officer would find on a transcript. Follow the directions. The essay is your teen's chance to engage in thoughtful self-expression, but it isn't the place to ramble about why a college is your teen's dream school or explore tangents about his or her life or feelings. Remind your teen to carefully read and ponder the essay prompt given by the college. Don't disregard any instructions. If there's a word count, stick to it. If specific questions are asked, be sure your teen submits something that answers them. Create a detailed outline first. Rarely do words flow together to create a compelling essay without sufficient planning. Your teen must spend time creating an outline with a beginning, middle and ending. The outline should include good examples and clearly show how the essay will move from start to finish. Before your teen starts writing, have him or her review and edit the outline if needed. Are there gaps in the story? Is the main takeaway of the essay clear from the outline? Allow plenty of time for multiple drafts. It's understandable that your teen might be focused on preparing for the SAT or ACT and narrowing down colleges and universities of interest, but it's critical to allow time to craft a well-written essayand revise it. If an application is due January 1, a sample timeline might be creating the outline by November 1, first draft by November 10, second draft by November 20 and final draft in early December. This allows your teen time to set the essay aside for a couple of weeks and read it with fresh eyes (and proofread and fine-tune if necessary). Edit like a pro. Speaking of drafts, your teen might question the suggestion that an essay requires rewriting several times. Yes, it's true. A great essay takes writing, revising and revising again. Encourage your teen to do the obviousproofread for errors and edit wordy or confusing sectionsbut a great self-editor should ask questions while reviewing as well, such as: Does the essay hook the reader from the very start? Whats the point of the essay and did I capture it effectively? Is any part of the essay too long or too rushed? Is there a clear conflict that caused me to change in some specific way or take a new path? Did I achieve the desired tone for the essay (moving or humorous, for example)? Does the voice sound and feel like me? For each and every sentence, could I say it better or more clearly? The college application essay is the chance to show an admissions officer who your teen is as a student and a personbeyond his or her transcript and test scores. Its a personal statement that should come from the heart and share with the college to which your teen is applying why he or she would be a great fit as a student there. Your teen should be sincere and articulate and remember that a colleges goal in requesting supplemental essays from applicants is to give them the chance to tell the college something about themselves. This is a powerful opportunityencourage your teen to put his or her best foot forward. Preparing for Upcoming Student Loan Payments To Defer, or Not to Defer - Private Tutoring
Preparing for Upcoming Student Loan Payments To Defer, or Not to Defer Anna L Apr 9, 2013 Our guest post today is written by Angie Picardo, a financial analyst that knows a thing or two about student loans, repayment, deferment. We hope you enjoy this article and find it helpful. You can learn more about here on her Google Plus Profile. College students with significant student loan debt who also graduate during a down economy are faced with a big challenge. Finding and keeping a job during an economic recession is hard enough for those who have long since graduated, and this challenge becomes even more difficult for new waves of college graduates who often have little job experience under their belt. Finding a job for these graduates tends to be the most important task for them, especially in order to pay back student loans that are accumulating interest. Consider the data; student loan debt has surpassed credit card debt in the United States. According to Pew Research data, a record one-in-five households owe student load debt. In 2001, 12% of American households had student load debt. This number increased to 15% in 2007, and by 2010, had reached a staggering 19%. Recent data from the New York Fed shows that in the first quarter of 2012, the under 30 age group has the most borrowers at 14 million, followed by 10.6 million for the 30-39 group, 5.7 million in the 40-49 category, 4.6 million in the 50-59 age group and the over 60 category with the least number of borrowers at 2.2 million for an overall total of 37.1 million. Many people with student loan debt who have yet to find a job are considering loan deferments to stymie their student loan payments for a short period of time while looking for a job or saving up enough to make their first debt payments. Nevertheless, deferments have their pros and cons. Students pondering whether or not they should defer should conduct solid research about deferment while finding out all of the policies and terms of deferment from their respective lenders. Deferment, sometimes called forbearance, is not for everyone, so it is important for recent grads to analyze their financial situation and determine the best route for them in terms of paying back student loans. Missing a student loan payment is never a good idea. Defaulting on a loan can cause penalties on a personâs credit score or have their loan sent to a debt management firm that can impose other, more dire penalties against the debtor. In a situation in which a recent graduate does not have savings or access to finances to begin to pay off a student loan, deferment is one method that can be used to avoid defaulting. However, many student loans have the option to defer one time only, or one time within a given time frame. If this is the case, graduates must carefully choose when to defer. This is extremely difficult to do since no one can tell the future, making it often impossible for those new to the job market to know what their employment status will be in coming years. Deferring while working at a low-paying job may be a bad idea if the job doesnât work out and the debtor finds him or herself completely unemployed the year after with no option for forbearance since it has already been used. It is therefore extremely important for all those with a student loan to assess what the lender terms and guidelines state, especially when it comes to deferment. As graduation approaches, current students should do as much homework as they possibly can as they prepare to take on their upcoming loans. Organizing all of a lenderâs information and ensuring that important terms and policies in the fine print can be found easily, especially in the event that an important question arises in the middle of a studentâs payback or deferment period. Further, students should ask lenders what they monthly payments might be, how long it would take the loan to be paid off (if minimum payments are made), and at which rate the loan will accumulate interest over time. Additionally, some people do not qualify for deferment. Lenders generally have specific criteria that debtors must meet in order to qualify for special student loan repayment programs such as deferment. Many people who find themselves outside of the criteria to receive a deferment option either wind up defaulting on their loan payments or are forced to consolidate their debts through a debt consolidation agency. It is nevertheless important to always keep an open line of communication with the lender, as many are focused on getting paid back, and are therefore more apt to work with recent graduates who might not qualify for their forbearance programs.
